How to Rename, Regenerate, and Freeze Virtual Cards
Last updated March 23, 2026
Slash gives you complete control over your virtual cards after creation. You can rename cards for better organization, regenerate compromised card numbers, freeze cards temporarily, delete cards you no longer need, and lock cards to specific merchants. These management tools let you maintain a clean, secure, and well-organized card portfolio as your business evolves.
This guide covers every management action available for your Slash virtual cards and when to use each one.
Renaming Cards
Clear naming is one of the most effective ways to stay organized, especially when you have many cards. Click on any card from the Cards page, then click the card name to edit it.
Naming best practices:
- Use the merchant or vendor name: "Nike," "Shopify," "AWS"
- Include the purpose: "Q1 Marketing," "Inventory - February," "Team Lunch Card"
- Add identifiers for groups: "Drop Cards - Batch 3," "Subscription - Monthly"
Good naming pays dividends when you are looking at your transaction history and want to instantly know which card was used where.
Regenerating Cards
Regenerating a card issues a brand-new card number, expiration date, and CVV while preserving the card's name, group assignment, and merchant lock settings. Your configuration stays intact; only the card details change.
When to regenerate:
- A card's details were compromised or leaked
- You suspect unauthorized use
- A merchant you no longer trust has your card details saved
- You want to refresh card details as a security precaution
To regenerate, click on the card and select Regenerate from the card details panel. The old card details become invalid immediately. Any merchant that had the old details saved (for subscriptions, auto-pay, etc.) will need to be updated with the new details.
Freezing and Unfreezing Cards
Freezing temporarily disables a card without deleting it. A frozen card declines all transaction attempts until you unfreeze it.
When to freeze:
- You are not actively using a card but may need it again later
- You suspect fraudulent activity and want to stop transactions while you investigate
- You want to pause a subscription card temporarily
- You are between reselling drops and want to lock down your cards until the next one
Freezing is non-destructive. The card retains all its settings, and you can unfreeze it at any time to resume normal use.
Deleting Cards
Deleting permanently removes a card from your account. This action cannot be undone.
Before deleting, make sure:
- There are no active subscriptions or recurring payments on the card
- There are no pending authorizations that have not yet settled
- You have moved any important card details you need to reference
Deleting is the right choice for cards you are completely done with and will never need again.
Merchant Locking
Merchant locking restricts a card so it can only be used at merchants you explicitly approve. This is one of the most powerful security features on Slash.
How to Set Up Merchant Locking
Step 1: Open Merchant Settings
Go to Cards and click Merchants Allowed.
Step 2: Switch to Custom Mode
Select Custom and click Apply. This changes the card from accepting all merchants to only accepting merchants on your approved list.
Step 3: Add Approved Merchants
Search for merchants by name and click to add them. Only merchants on this list will accept the card. Remove merchants by clicking the delete button next to their name.
Merchant locking use cases:
- Lock a card to Nike so it can only be used on nike.com
- Lock a batch of cards to a single platform for a reselling drop
- Block a risky merchant while allowing everything else (blocklist mode)
- Create a "subscriptions only" card locked to your specific subscription services
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I undo a card regeneration?
No. Once regenerated, the old card details are permanently deactivated. The new details are final.
Do frozen cards still show up in my card list?
Yes. Frozen cards remain in your card list with a visual indicator showing their frozen status.
Can I merchant-lock and freeze a card at the same time?
Yes. All card settings are independent and can be combined.
What happens to pending transactions if I freeze a card?
Transactions that were already authorized before the freeze will still settle. New transactions will be declined.
